Meet the TALL team

We thought it was about time you met your TALL team, figured out what makes them all (even Bert) tick, and learned a few fun facts. We determined the best way to accomplish this was a Proust-like questionnaire, with a little less philosophy and a lot more architecture. Scroll down for a few giggles and guffaws!

TALLstudio Architecture - Ocean Springs, MS

Madison

1. Most admired architect(s):
Steven Holl. I find his whole process inspiring from sketches, to light play, to the integration of color.
Luis Barragan - his simple planes of color are bold and confident, something I strive to be in life and architecture.

2. Favorite place to visit - architecturally?
Amsterdam. The tight spaces, canals integrated into the city, color and pattern, it immediately feels like home with something interesting everywhere you look.

3. Biggest fear:
Not being bold enough.

4. Proudest accomplishment:
Starting TALL with Mark, becoming a licensed architect, and building a house all at, or before, the age of 30. Whew!

5. Form or function?
A fine balance.

6. Passions outside of architecture:
Cooking (or reading about cooking) and making things with my hands.

7. Secret talent:
I'm pretty handy with power tools (not sure this counts as a talent).

8. One thing you couldn't live without (the desert island question):
Books. I could find food and build a house, but I couldn't live without books and Mark (I would have a small boat where I could fit both Mark and books on the desert island).

9. Currently reading:
Fair Shot- Rethinking Inequality and How We Earn by Chris Hughes
On my night stand:
Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond
Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward

10. Currently listening to:
Jain, Leon Bridges, MisterWives

11. Coffee or tea?
Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon

12. If you were a color, what color would you be?
Yellow. Vibrant, warm, happy.

13. Spirit animal?
Roberta, or some other short legged animal.

14. What quality do you admire in others?:
Persistence.

15. Dream project?
A library. Combining a love of reading and architecture would be ideal.

16. Favorite museum:
The Perez in Miami

17. Favorite journey:
Building a house. It was exhilarating, terrifying, and one of the most gratifying things that I have ever done, and to get to build it with Mark was pretty exceptional. We were able to create a space that represented each of our personalities in a balanced and fun manner.

18. What do you eat for breakfast?
I'm said to have a "flavor of the week", but I typically alternate between eggs and some sort of toast concoction (avocado, nut butter, ricotta, you name it, I've topped toast with it), if I eat at all.

19. Cookie or cake?
Cookies. All day. (Literally...all day).

TALLstudio Architecture - Ocean Springs, MS

Mark

1. Most admired architect:
Madison Talley

2. Favorite place to visit - architecturally?
Copenhagen

3. Biggest fear:
Ear wax

4. Proudest accomplishment:
Hitting a home run as a seven year old one hour after flipping over my handlebars in what had to be the worst bike wreck in history.

5. Form or function?
Function fudges form (or you could insert the real word instead of fudge)

6. Passions outside of architecture:
Traveling and reading, which are essentially the same thing

7. Secret talent:
Clapping with one hand

8. One thing you couldn't live without (the desert island question):

Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust

10. Currently listening to:
J. Cole's "KOD" album and A Perfect Circle's "Eat the Elephant" album

11. Coffee or tea?
Tea, because after a protracted coffee addiction which consisted of roller coaster stimulant highs and lows, I find life easier to deal with. And, my breath doesn't smell like a dead person's foot.

12. If you were a color, what color would you be?
Purple

13. Spirit animal?
Penguin

14. What quality do you admire in others?
A sense of humor considered as "a mind in the gutter". Also, empathy is good trait.

15. Dream project?
Library/Museum. A library about museums or a museum about libraries would be acceptable.

16. Favorite museum
de Young Museum

17. Favorite journey
The gritty winter Dublin streets are the perfect preface to the the idyllic sea-misted cliff-dwelling town of Howth, Ireland. A 30 minute train ride throws one from urban congestion into an atmosphere of salty cool air with nearly vertical rock outcroppings that fishing camps and old inns seem to thrive within. After a several hour hike up the cliffs followed by leisurely pub crawling, one effortlessly slides back to the train knowing that the day trip was the epitome of gratification.

18. What do you eat for breakfast?
Old fashioned uncooked oatmeal combined with boring healthy items with cold milk as the lubricant

19. Cookie or cake?
Cookie cake

3. Biggest fear
To not meet my life goals and settle for being mediocre.

4. Proudest accomplishment
Will be when I graduate from college!

5. Form or function?
Form follows function, form is nice but with no real function within the form the whole piece (architecture) wont come together.

6. Passions outside of architecture
Art, yoga, Pilates and cooking (and eating the cooking)

7. Secret talent?
Uh, pass? no, I long board but I'm not sure if its a talent

8. One thing you couldn't live without (the desert island question)
One thing I couldn't live without, food

15. Dream project?
Dream project would be making a vacation home placed on a mountain somewhere in a European country

16. Favorite museum
Art Institute of Chicago

17. Favorite journey
My grandmother lives in Caguas, Puerto Rico. In order to get to her house you need to drive up several hills. Driving up you gradually get further into heavily forested areas and you leave the city- the views are amazing. The trip itself is terrifying, but that can be fun too.

18. What do you eat for breakfast?
Usually nothing but if I had to chose it would be Turkey sausage and over medium eggs

19. Cookie or cake?
Cookie ice cream sandwich

Roberta (office mascot)

6. Passions outside of architecture:
I like outside more than architecture, DUH.

7. Secret talent:
Barking at the absolute worst times.

8. One thing you couldn't live without (the desert island question):
Sleeping. I might have misunderstood the question... z,z,z,z,z,z. Oops! feel asleep.

17. Favorite journey:
I getta sniff... it must be squirrel... wait, is it? One more sniff. It is Squirrel!   HOLY MOLY, I see a squirrel! I run and I run and I run and I.... get tired and I slow down, and out of the kindness of my sweet little heart, I let the squirrel get away. That's one lucky squirrel.

18. What do you eat for breakfast?
The same crappy food out of the bag that I eat for every other "meal". If the food is this bad, we should start calling them "steals" instead of "meals", because they steal part of me away every time I have to eat them.

19. Cookie or cake?
Kitty poop
