Competitive Nature

TALLstudio Architecture - Autism Speaks competition
You can’t look at the competition and say you’re going to do it better. You have to look at the competition and say you’re going to do it differently.
— Steve Jobs

TALL recently competed in an international architecture competition, something we try to do at least twice a year, and we thought we would share our entry with you. The reason we voluntarily compete? It allows us to dream up the seemingly impossible, forces us to get out of our comfort zones, and we get to collaborate with other creatives. For this project, hosted by Autism Speaks, with the goal of finding a solution for adults with autism moving out of the familial home and living on their own, we teamed up with Oliver Preus of Christian Preus Landscape Architecture. We have been friends and colleagues with Oliver for awhile now and thought he could bring a fresh perspective to the project through both imaginative landscapes and urban planning.

"What did THEY propose?" you may be asking yourself. Let us show you!

We titled our project "Sensory Haus" as it was designed to respond to spoken and unspoken sensations of an autistic resident and because "haus" sounds cooler than "house"- am I right? The idea was to create a testing center that could be transported easily, to test the emotions of autistic adults in relation to different materials, textures, colors, light, the list goes on. The data would then be used to customize a home for the individual in either a rural, suburban, or urban setting depending upon their goals and compatibility. We won't get into all of the details (you might fall asleep on us!), but we will show you a few of the images we submitted, and if you are REALLY into it, we have included a link at the bottom to our full submission. Happy reading and we would love your feedback!

We thought putting our sweet faces on the front page would give us an edge (ha!), but alas, we didn't end up winning the competition. We had a great time doing it, are proud of the project we produced, and we put our creativity to good use. Want to read more? Click below!
